Vet scales typically come in different shapes and sizes depending on the type of animals you need to weigh.  There are small square models for weighing cats or small dogs or their are much larger rectangular models for larger dogs, pigs or other farms animals. 

Tree LVS-700LB is a decent size veterinary scale with sufficient capacity for weighing domesticated animals and it includes a stainless steel platform with a removable rubber mat.  As you may have guessed, a steel platform can get slippery so it is best to use the mat to provide better traction for the animal.

When purchasing a fairly large vet scale, you should only look at models that provide portability.  A handle and transport castors are built right into the LVS700LB so transporting the scale or simply putting it away in between use is easy enough to do.  The next thing you need to consider is what kinds of advanced features do you need and are willing to pay for.  RS232 enables data transfer to a PC or printer and in some cases can cost extra.  Tree LVS-700LB includes this interface as a standard feature, but the serial cable and necessary software are sold separately.  In order for your PC to support this feature, it requires a 9-pin serial port on the computer's case which is usually included on most computers.  Winwedge software may be used so the computer can read the data from the scale.  Without purchasing data communication software, even when connected to proper cabling the vet scale will not be recognized by the PC.  It requires the software to detect it as another piece of hardware equipment that can then be integrated with the computer.
